You do not need to see every palace building on your first visit. A more rewarding approach is to follow the main visitor route slowly, taking time to notice how broad squares, successive courtyards and architectural details fit together.

Start at Meridian Gate: plan your entrance and exit

The visitor route runs from south to north: enter through Meridian Gate, then leave through the Gate of Divine Prowess or East Glorious Gate. Plan your arrival and departure separately rather than expecting to return to the entrance. Check the official visitor guide for current access arrangements.

Start with the overall layout, then look more closely. Bronze lions, steps and rooflines offer useful points of focus when observing the buildings’ proportions and decoration.

For photographs, alternate between wider views and small details. Instead of waiting for every visitor to leave the frame, including a travel companion can help convey the scale of a courtyard.

How much time to allow

Allow around half a day for an introductory visit without several in-depth exhibitions. This is an itinerary suggestion, not a museum requirement. Visitors interested in architecture, collections or photography may prefer a longer visit.

When you reach the Imperial Garden, slow down to enjoy the garden scenery. Leave room in your schedule for security checks, walking, breaks and exhibitions that catch your interest rather than trying to fit everything into a tightly packed day.

The museum requires real-name reservations, including for visitors eligible for concessions. Check availability and identification requirements through the official ticketing website.
