From residence to garden
Prince Gong's Mansion is best understood in half a day as a transition from the formal residence axis to a layered rear garden. You do not need to memorise every courtyard. First read the building hierarchy and central axis, then follow the landscape, rockwork and Fu symbolism. This guide is based on public official information and does not invent personal experience, queues or shop reviews.

Official opening and reservation
The current website of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's Prince Kung's Palace Museum lists opening at 08:30, ticket sales ending at 16:00, entry ending at 16:10 and closing at 17:00. It closes on Mondays except statutory holidays and lists a 40-yuan ticket. The official ticket notice says visitors must buy online in advance under real-name rules; the earliest booking time is listed as 20:00 ten days before the visit. Identification types such as mainland ID cards, Hong Kong and Macao permits, Taiwan permits and passports have different entry procedures, so choose the correct type when booking.
These rules can still be affected by same-day availability and notices. Reopen the official online ticket page before buying. The official notice says visitors booking with a mainland ID card may scan the original card at the checkpoint, while some other document types may require an entry voucher from the comprehensive service centre. Do not treat a third-party guide's claim of guaranteed same-day tickets as fact.
Walking the residence axis
After admission, begin along the central axis and read the sequence of gates, halls, residential rooms and the rear cover building. On a first pass, look at thresholds, courtyard scale, roofs and sight lines before stopping for photographs. The residence section is best read as an order: public spaces gradually give way to private rooms, and the route becomes more enclosed.
After the western gate or rear section, shift your attention to the garden. Rockeries, grottoes, ponds and pavilions create curved views that contrast with the ordered residence axis. The Fu Stele is one of the major points of interest, but current routes and explanations on site take priority. Do not touch inscriptions or cross barriers.

Garden effort and safety
The rear garden includes steps, rockwork and water edges. Wear shoes with good grip and leave room for breaks. The official visitor guide warns that there are many rocks and steps and that climbing is prohibited; it also asks visitors not to play near ponds and waterside pavilions. When the route is busy, clear narrow doorways and steps before taking photographs.
With only one hour, focus on the residence axis, rear cover building, western gate and Fu Stele. With two hours or more, add the garden's winding route. Official ticket pages and notices may adjust areas for exhibitions, conservation or activities. Do not use an old photograph to fill in a section that is closed today.
Linking with Shichahai
Prince Gong's Mansion is near Shichahai. After leaving, you can treat Qianhai or Yinding Bridge as a flexible walk, but this is not an extension of the museum route. Finish the timed attraction first, then decide according to weather and energy. Streets, construction and businesses change quickly, so this article does not recommend an unverified shop or promise a fixed budget.
