What to see in half a day
The Summer Palace is not just the Tower of Buddhist Incense. Its main idea is the relationship between Longevity Hill, the Long Corridor and Kunming Lake. For a first visit, enter through East Palace Gate and follow a westward route through the former court and residential area, the Long Corridor, the Tower area and the lake. The official site lists several complete routes; this article adapts one that is easy to understand. Allow about three to four hours as an editorial suggestion, not a promise from the park.

Opening, tickets and inner gardens
The official guide currently lists peak season as 1 April to 31 October: the park is open from 06:00 to 20:00 and stops admission at 19:00. In the low season, from 1 November to 31 March, it is open from 06:30 to 19:00 and stops admission at 18:00. The inner gardens include the Tower of Buddhist Incense, Dehe Garden, the Summer Palace Museum and Suzhou Street. They are listed as 08:00–18:00 in peak season and 08:30–17:00 in the low season; several inner gardens close on Mondays except statutory holidays.
The official page currently shows a 30-yuan peak-season admission ticket and a 60-yuan combination ticket, and a 20-yuan low-season admission ticket and a 50-yuan combination ticket. The combination ticket includes park admission and inner-garden admission. Confirm prices and concessions again before buying. Boat service is usually available from mid-March to mid-November, but the official page says exact dates depend on the latest notice and bad weather may stop service.
From East Palace Gate to the lake
After entering through East Palace Gate, begin around the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, then move toward Wenchang Gallery, the Yulan Hall and Yiyun Hall. Slow down here to see how political, residential and landscape spaces share one garden. The Long Corridor is not merely a passage to rush through: its paintings, openings and borrowed views create a continuous sequence of framed scenes.
Near Paiyun Hall, decide whether the Tower of Buddhist Incense fits your energy and ticket choice. The hill path has slopes. Visitors with young children or limited mobility can first enjoy the lakeside view before deciding whether to climb. After descending, continue toward the Stone Boat or Nanhu Island so that the hill architecture can be seen again at the scale of the water.

Should you take a boat?
A boat can shorten part of the return walk and offer a different view of Kunming Lake, but it is not essential. Routes, ticketing times and prices vary with season, weather and operation. The official page warns that weekends and holidays may involve longer waits. If your priority is architecture, skip the boat and keep time for the Long Corridor and hill buildings. If you do board, check the day's route, price and safety notice at the pier.
Planning for older visitors and children
The park is large, so a half-day route should follow one main direction. Do not try to combine East Palace Gate, North Palace Gate and the Western Causeway in one short visit. Wear supportive shoes, bring water and sun protection, and leave a way to turn back on the hill. The official website provides accessibility information, but actual facilities should be confirmed on site. Do not feed birds or run beside the water.
