Wangjiang Tower Park and Xue Tao: Bamboo on the Jin River
On the south bank of the Jin River stands a grove of bamboo with a Tang-dynasty poetess behind it. Wangjiang Tower Park is at 30 Wangjiang Road, Chengdu, on the south bank of the Jin River, covering 188 mu — 39 mu of protected heritage and 149 mu of open garden — and is a key national cultural relic site.
Chongli Tower, 1889
The park is built around the Wangjiang Tower complex. Chongli Tower was first built in 1889, the fifteenth year of the Guangxu reign, and stands 27.9 metres high; its predecessor was the Ming-dynasty Huilan Pagoda, and it houses a statue of the star deity of literature. Elsewhere in the park are Ming and Qing remains including Zhuojin Tower, Yinshi Tower and the Xue Tao Well.
Xue Tao and Xue Tao paper
The park's link to the Tang poetess Xue Tao is the other half of its meaning.
The Xue Tao Well in the park is where water was drawn in the Ming to imitate Xue Tao's paper, and beside it stand inscriptions from the Kangxi reign. Her tomb was rebuilt among the bamboo in 1994, its stone inscribed "Tomb of Xue Hongdu, female collator of the Tang". The Xue Tao Memorial Hall and Huanjian Pavilion demonstrate Tang papermaking — the small deep-red sheets she devised are known as "Xue Tao paper".
Five hundred kinds of bamboo
The park is known for its bamboo, gathering more than 500 species from home and abroad into what is called the "Brocade City Bamboo Garden". In 2023 a project removed walls to open up the grounds, remaking 14,000 sq m and planting more than 80 species of trees, shrubs and bamboo to create a more open setting.
