Ice Peak: Xi'an's Own Soda Since 1948

In small Xi'an eateries an orange soda often stands beside the liangpi and the roujiamo. It is Ice Peak, born in 1948, a soda brand native to the city.

Where the name came from

Ice Peak began as the Northwest Soda Factory, set up by a Xinjiang merchant who brought equipment in from Tianjin; in 1953 it merged into the Xi'an Food Factory and formally took the Ice Peak brand.

The name is said to come from a well winch used to draw water for the soda, which after heavy snow froze with the snow piling into the shape of a small peak.

Three changes of package

Ice Peak began in 200 ml glass bottles; in 2012 a 330 ml can joined it, creating a two-format system; and in June 2024 a larger 460 ml glass bottle was introduced.

The range centres on orange carbonated drink and also covers plant-based drinks such as sour plum, flavoured drinks and tea drinks.

A bottle's place

In January 2021 Ice Peak began listing guidance for the Shenzhen SME board; in October that year it placed 98th on the Hurun list of Chinese brands with the deepest historical culture. In May 2022 the company withdrew its IPO filing, halting the process; in December 2023 its controlling shareholder changed; in February 2024 it joined the third batch of China Time-honoured Brands; and in March that year it cut prices on some products in Xi'an for a period.

For locals Ice Peak is more than a drink — it is the fixed third member of the liangpi, roujiamo and Ice Peak set.
