Great Tang All Day Mall: A 2.1 km Pedestrian Street at the Pagoda's Foot

South from the foot of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda runs a 2,100 m pedestrian street, from the pagoda's south square all the way to the Tang city-wall ruins. It is the country's only large Tang-style architectural pedestrian street built around high Tang culture — the Great Tang All Day Mall.

The dimensions of a street

The mall sits at the foot of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Yanta District, Xi'an, covering 9.36 million sq m of ground with 650,000 sq m of floor area: 2,100 m north to south and 500 m east to west, from the pagoda's south square down to the Tang wall ruins, between Ci'en East and West Roads.

Construction began in August 2002, leasing was arranged from December 2008 and the lighting programme started in April 2009. On 26 September the following year Kaiyuan Square opened, together with two major sculptural groups, the Flourishing Kaiyuan Era and Empress Wu's Procession.

From street to cultural IP

At the end of 2018 the mall became one of eleven pilot pedestrian-street upgrades in China and officially opened on 25 December that year. On 30 April 2022 the "Twelve Hours of Chang'an" themed block opened. The street has since been refined toward a world-class cultural tourism and leisure district, organised as one axis, two markets, three cores, four zones and five inner lanes.

It takes high Tang culture as its backdrop and Tang motifs as its thread, marked by nodes such as the Zhenguan and Kaiyuan squares.

How to walk it

This is a street that is better at night than by day. Daylight shows the Tang-style buildings and the broad axis; after dark the lighting, crowds and street performances turn it into something else. It runs 2,100 m, so allow two hours with stops.

Practical Notes

Walk north to south, starting from the pagoda and finishing at the Tang wall ruins.
It is extremely crowded on holidays — keep a close hold on children.
Street snacks are pricey; save a proper meal for elsewhere.
