Banpo: A Six-Thousand-Year-Old Moated Village

In the spring of 1953, while Xi'an was building a textile town east of the city, a six-thousand-year-old village came out of the ground. It sits at Banpo village on the east bank of the Chan River, an early type of Yangshao culture, ringed by a ditch six to eight metres wide.

What a complete village looks like

Banpo is a classic settlement site of a matrilineal clan community in the Yellow River basin, roughly 6,000 years old. It is a large settlement of about 50,000 sq m, enclosed by a ditch some 6–8 m wide, with dwellings inside and the whole divided into dwelling, pottery-making and burial zones.

The excavated area of 10,000 sq m yielded a rich haul: 45 house foundations, two pens, 200 pits, six kilns, 250 graves and some ten thousand tools and household objects.

Its place in Chinese archaeology

Banpo was the first site in China to reveal the closed, ditch-ringed settlement form of the Neolithic and the way it was laid out, while also showing the cultural and social character of different Yangshao phases. It thereby established the Banpo and Late Banpo types as benchmarks and provided a reference point for building a chronological scale of the Chinese Neolithic.

Beyond that, the features and finds supply grouped material for studying Neolithic environment, subsistence, building materials and techniques, burial practice and social structure.

What to look at

At Banpo you are not looking at treasures but at the traces of a living system: how the ditch curves, how the houses are ordered, where the kilns sit and why the graves stand apart. Put those together and a six-thousand-year-old life takes shape.
