Shaanxi History Museum: A National Collection in a Tang-Style Complex

In 1944 Shaanxi drew on the collections of the Beilin and the Xijing Library to found the province's first modern provincial museum. Four decades on, with the Beilin running out of room, planning for a new building began in 1977 — the museum you see today.

A museum planned as a Tang palace

The Shaanxi History Museum stands in Yanta District. Established on 16 April 1991 and opened on 20 June that year, it was designed by the architect Zhang Jinqiu. Its axial symmetry, central hall and corner towers evoke Tang palace architecture, making it one of the large national museums built after reform and opening.

Its relationship with the Beilin matters: once the new building opened in 1991 the old provincial museum split into two independent institutions, the Shaanxi History Museum and the Beilin Museum, with the steles and stone carvings going to the latter.

Why the collection is so heavy

Shaanxi was the political centre of the Zhou, Qin, Han and Tang, so the collection concentrates on capitals, ritual, tombs and cultural exchange. It runs from Shang and Zhou bronzes through Qin and Han tomb figurines to Han and Tang tomb murals, Tang gold and silver, and ceramics across the dynasties.

As of 2021 the holdings numbered 1,725,754 items or sets, of which 21,023 are graded treasures. That scale dictates how you visit: you cannot see it all, so you must choose.

How to leave with something

The museum joined the first batch of national first-class museums in 2008. Its permanent display follows the ancient civilisation of Shaanxi, with thematic galleries for Tang murals, treasures and archaeological finds; a separate Qin–Han branch sits in the Qinhan New City of Xixian, not to be confused with the main building.

Rather than walking end to end, pick a thread: bronzes and figurines for Zhou and Qin, tomb murals and metalwork for Han and Tang.

The Qin–Han branch is out at Xixian New City, so schedule it apart from the main museum.
